Why You Instantly Like Some Brands (and Ignore Others)
The Starbucks Siren Logo: One of the World’s Most Recognisable Brand Marks
By 6am Creative | Branding & Website Design on the Mornington Peninsula
Have you ever come across a brand you’ve immediately disliked?
Maybe it looked polished but lacked personality. Maybe it felt too young, too old, too derivative, or too old-fashioned. Maybe it felt bland, safe and generic, like it could belong to almost anyone.
Or perhaps you couldn’t quite explain why - something about it simply didn’t feel right.
Now think about a brand you genuinely connect with. Maybe interactions with this brand makes you feel like you’re choosing something meaningful - for yourself, someone you love, or even the planet. Maybe it feels trustworthy, familiar or warm. Maybe it feels decadent, tough or inspiring.
That feeling is rarely accidental. Long before we’ve read every detail about a business, compared prices or explored every service, we’re already forming impressions. Our brains are constantly looking for clues:
Do I trust this business?
Does this feel like the right fit for me?
Do these people understand what I need?
That’s the power of branding. And surprisingly, it has very little to do with simply having a beautiful logo.
Branding is About Emotion Before Information
Think about a brand you love. Not necessarily because it’s the cheapest option or because you need what they offer every day - but because something about it speaks to you.
Maybe it represents creativity. Maybe it feels considered and thoughtful. Maybe it gives you confidence that you’re making the right choice.
The strongest brands create an emotional connection before they make a sale.
People don’t just buy products or services. They buy feelings, experiences and the confidence that they’ve found the right people to help them.
We often like to think our decisions are purely logical, but emotion usually plays a much bigger role than we realise. We notice something, we feel something, and then we find the logical reasons to support that feeling.
Great branding understands this.
Your Gut Instinct is Usually Right
Now think about a brand that doesn’t appeal to you. Why?
Maybe it feels generic. Maybe it’s trying too hard to follow a trend. Perhaps it looks unpolished, inauthentic, or doesn’t seem to match the quality of the business behind it.
Most of us struggle to explain exactly why we connect with some brands and ignore others - but we know it when we see it.
That’s because branding works on a subconscious level. Every colour, font, image and word communicates something about a business. Together, these choices create an impression of who you are, what you value and who you’re trying to reach.
Great Branding Doesn’t Try To Please Everyone
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is trying to appeal to everyone. A little premium. A little playful. A little corporate. A little quirky. The result is often a brand that feels safe, but forgettable.
Just think of some of the world’s best known and well-loved brands. The strongest brands make choices.
They understand who they’re speaking to and they’re comfortable knowing they won’t resonate with absolutely everyone.
Ironically, that clarity is exactly what makes them memorable to the people who matter most.
A luxury interior designer and a family-friendly renovation company might both create beautiful spaces, but they are speaking to completely different customers. Their photography, language, pricing and overall experience should reflect that.
There is no “right” personality for a brand. The important thing is understanding yours.

Finding the Heart of a Brand
At 6am Creative, branding doesn’t begin with colour palettes or logo concepts. It begins with understanding.
Before we think about how a brand should look, we need to understand what sits underneath it.
What makes your business different?
What do you value?
What kind of experience do you want people to have?
What do you want customers to remember about you?
Our branding guide has been designed to help uncover those answers through thoughtful questions and conversations. Some questions are practical, while others are designed to encourage a different way of thinking.
If your business was a person, who would it be? What qualities would it have? What would it never be?
Sometimes we’ll even ask unexpected questions - if your brand was an animal, a holiday destination or a favourite place, what would it be? It might sound a bit strange but these creative exercises often reveal far more than simply asking someone what colours they like.
The goal is to uncover your brand’s North Star.
We’re looking to unearth the qualities about your brand that remain true regardless of trends, new products or future growth. That North Star becomes a guide for every decision that follows, from your logo and website through to photography, copywriting and marketing.

It All Starts with Knowing Who You’re Talking To
One of the most important questions we ask is surprisingly simple:
Who is your ideal customer?
Not everyone who could buy from you. The person you most want to work with who would come back and buy from you time and time again, who would recommend your services to others and become a loyal advocate for your brand. Understanding your ideal customer is about much more than demographics. It’s about understanding people.
What problem or pain can you help them solve? What are they worried about? What do they value? What kind of experience are they looking for? What makes them choose one business over another?
The clearer we become about who we’re speaking to, the easier it is to create a brand that genuinely resonates.
Your ideal customer influences far more than your marketing.
It helps shape your tone of voice, your photography, your website content, your pricing and even the services or products you choose to offer.
When you understand who you’re speaking to, decisions become much simpler.
Instead of asking: “Do I like this?” You can ask: “Will this connect with the people we’re trying to reach?”
Good Branding Helps You Understand Where You Belong
Branding isn’t just about attracting customers.
It also helps position your business in the market. Sometimes businesses struggle with pricing because their branding is sending mixed messages. If you offer a premium experience but your website and visuals don’t communicate that value, customers may not understand what makes you different.
Clear positioning helps people understand not only what you do - but why they should choose you.
Authentic Brands Don’t Chase Every Trend
It’s tempting to look at what everyone else is doing and think:
“Should we look more like that?” But trends come and go.
The strongest brands aren’t built around what is fashionable today. They’re built around what is true.
Good branding doesn’t force a personality onto a business. It reveals what is already there.
That’s why the goal isn’t to create the trendiest brand in your industry. It’s to create one that feels genuinely authentic.
Ten Mile Track Visual Identity Concept Design Business Cards
The above branding package for Ten Mile Track demonstrates how good branding extends far beyond a logo. Every decision, from the earthy colour palette inspired by the Tasmanian landscape to the elegant typography and restrained layout, works together to communicate a sense of quality, craftsmanship and place.
Developed by designer Sharmila Sandrasegar, the brand provided a clear creative direction that informed every aspect of the website we designed, from the typography and colour palette through to the favicon and overall user experience. Rather than imposing a new visual style, our role was to ensure the website carried the same personality, values and quiet confidence as the brand itself, creating a seamless experience from first impression through to purchase.
When a brand is thoughtfully developed from the outset, future design decisions become much clearer. Instead of asking, "What should this page look like?", you're asking, "Does this feel like Ten Mile Track?"
That consistency is what helps build recognition, trust and lasting connections with customers.
Bringing Brands to Life
Sometimes we’re involved right from the beginning, helping businesses create an identity from scratch.
Projects such as Gillian Kearns & Associates and Australian Memorial Supplies involved developing visual identities that reflected the values and personality behind each business.
Other times, clients come to us with an established brand created through thoughtful strategy and design.
For Peninsula Recycled Timber and Ten Mile Track, our role was to translate those existing brand identities into websites that carried the same personality, story and feeling into the online experience.
Whether we’re creating a new identity or bringing an existing brand to life online, the goal remains the same:
To create something that captures the personality of your business, tells your story clearly and helps the right people feel a genuine connection.

Looking Beyond the Logo
A logo is important, but it’s only one small part of your brand. The real magic happens when everything works together. Your website, photography, copywriting, colours and customer experience should all feel like they belong to the same story.
Once your brand is clear, it becomes a filter for every future decision.
Your Website is Where Your Brand Comes Alive
Your brand creates the feeling. Your website is where people experience it.
For many customers, your website is their first meaningful interaction with your business. It’s where they decide whether to explore further, get in touch or keep looking.
A successful website needs more than good design. It needs strategy, clear messaging and an understanding of the people you’re trying to reach. That’s why branding and website design work so closely together.
When your strategy, visuals and messaging align, your website becomes more than an online brochure. It becomes a true reflection of your business.
